If you work with eco-mailing film, you might be wondering how to dispose of it safely and legally. This is particularly problematic for businesses and mailing companies that send out and receive large amounts of eco-mailing packaging. We appreciate the advantages of using eco-packaging, but what should we do with it one it’s fulfilled its role?

The collection and disposal of waste is currently legislated for under the EU Waste Framework Directive although, as with other EU directives, it may well be subject to review over the coming years.

The directorate requires member states to recover and dispose of waste without endangering human health or environmental wellbeing.

What is the difference between biodegradable and recyclable plastic?

Most types of plastic can be recycled to an extent. However, that extent depends on the available technology, as well as the cost of the processes involved.

Eco-packaging is slightly more complicated. There is a common perception among the wider public that eco/biodegradable and recyclable packaging are essentially the same thing. They’re all filed together under “environmentally friendly”, which is not strictly correct.

Biodegradable plastics are a common packaging material, particularly used with fruit and vegetables. The aim behind them is that if they end up disposed of by traditional methods of landfill or simply as litter, they’ll break-up and rot down fairly quickly without leaving an environmental trace.

Unfortunately, if they’re disposed of as recycling waste, they can cause all sorts of headaches for the waste disposal company.

Inform recipients with clearly labelled eco-mailing film

Environmentally conscious businesses need to play their part by ensuring the packaging they buy from mailing packaging suppliers is marked accordingly.

It’s quite clear that the days of simply labelling packaging as “green” must come to an end.

Good quality labelling of packaging that advises the public not to recycle the mailing film allows the public to make better-informed decisions on their waste disposal.

Does UK law allow eco-mailing packaging to be recycled?

Whilst biodegradable plastics are not universally recyclable and different types degrade in different ways, the law has not yet caught up with the technology.

Nor is there any regulatory marking standard to differentiate between materials, beyond the British Plastics Federation (BPF) advisory codes.
